Science
Science should contribute to children’s overall understanding of how and why things work and teach valuable practical skills. Science should spark curiosity and encourage children to be inquisitive about the world around them and enable them to develop a range of skills through enquiry-based learning. Children should pose questions, build confidence and the ability to find out and look for answers by applying the skills. Through investigations, children should work on their resilience, become inspired, critical thinkers, and develop a curiosity and wonder of the world.
At Burnt Ash, science lessons will begin with a ‘Big question’, which will be answered with ‘small questions’ linked to these. Each question will relate to the scientific knowledge that needs to be covered in each unit. Children will learn to use a variety approaches to answer the questions applying skills from the 5 lines of enquiry: observing over time; pattern seeking; identifying, classifying and grouping; comparative and fair testing; and researching using secondary sources.
