History

History helps build children’s understanding of society and the world around them. Through History, children can learn how past societies, governments, cultures and technologies were built, operated and how they have changed. History also helps ‘paint a picture’ of how we live today.

History is a favourite subject amongst the children at Burnt Ash. Children learn through an enquiry based approach right from Nursery up to Year 6. Hands on, practical, skill based learning enables the children to develop a depth to their historical knowledge. Experiences inside and outside of the school environment enable the children to make links between their learning and build on their knowledge year after year. Children confidently use retrieval activities to ensure information is frequently drawn upon.

History also acts as both a ‘mirror’ and a ‘window’ for our children at Burnt Ash. Our diverse curriculum allows children to learn more about their own culture and heritage (mirror) while also allowing plenty of opportunities to learn about the lives and experiences of others (window).
